I painted the old blue running shoe during a transformative time in my life. I was reflecting on the relationship of God and my spirituality to art, and this painting was a part of it. One day, after finishing the painting, I stared at it and stated “that’s a good teaching” – meaning this sort of realism is an exceptional way to praise God – and right at that moment, a moth appeared inside my mouth, and I opened it and the moth flew out. I took that as a sign, and it has continued to inspire me since I painted it. Now, in part because of that experience, I want to teach the art of realistic painting to others.
